Faythe Levine and Handmade Nation
Faythe Levine spoke about her work and her project Handmade Nation, then we watched Handmade Nation the video. Her story was very inspiring, because it was very against the grain. She hasn't taken the typically life plan that most American's follow. I like that she doesn't let money stand between what she truly wants to do. I myself take this approach to life and it was nice to see someone who does the same thing and is being very successful at it. I enjoyed how her piece, Handmade Nation, gives a voice to handcrafted arts, who by the general art community are not taken very seriously. Actually, quite hilariously, I've been obsessed with Etsy for over two years now and I have watched blog posts on YouTube by Faythe Levine and other Handmade Nation arts. So it was very interesting to see Faythe Levine in person and to hear her life story. Thanks for bringing her in!

Inspiration and Red House/ 3 Bands

RED HOUSE
To breach the gap between Syracuse University and Red House I would implement _ strategies...

1. Advertise. Most students on campus, don't even know what Red House is. Other students, generally art and design students, myself included, have heard of Red House, but have absolutely no idea what it is. I suggest putting up posters in well trafficked areas, such as Schine, dinning halls and residence halls to spread Red Houses name through campus. Red House should then set up a table in Schine to inform students about what they do... hand out pamphlets and attract people with small giveaways.

2. Sponsor an event and invite SU students to it. Possibly a spaghetti dinner or pancake breakfast. College students love food. But again, make sure to educate the attendees of Red House's mission and purpose.

3. Display students artwork in the galleries and hold exhibitions that are student friendly. Possibly even provide transportation like the limousine service provided by the Commercial Art Store.

THREE BANDS
Here are some bands Red House should bring to S.U.
1. Greg Laswell
2. Lifehouse
3. Incubus
4. Sigur Ros
5. Regina Spektor

Inspiration & Ted Talks

Ted Talk Responses

1. Dan Gilbert: "Why are we happy?"

Major life events or tragedies have less of an impact on our lives then we first image. For example whether or not we pass a test or assignment over time does not effect us. "We synthesize happiness, but we think happiness is a thing to be found" his humorous secrets to happiness that apply to people who could have been extraordinarily successful in other people's standards but are still happy, are...
1. accrue wealth, power, and prestige. Then loose it
2. spend as much of your life in prison as you possibly can.
3. Make someone else really, really rich
4. Never ever join the Beatles
"When preferences drive us too hard and too fast, because we have overrated the difference between these two futures. When our ambition is bounded it leads us to work joyfully, when our ambition is unbounded we are at risk- to lie to cheat, to steal, to hurt others, to sacrifice things of real value. Our longings and our worries are over blown, because we have the ability to manufacture the exact thing when we choose experience."

I found this taught highly enlightening. It also comes at a point when I am questioning my future, so it eased my mind a bit to realize that I have the ability to manufacture my own happiness. And that I get most stressed and unhappy when I am overwhelmed by choice and ideas of taking the wrong life path.

2. Tony Robbins: "Why we do what we do"
Tony Robbin speaks in a very commanding and motivating way. He spoke about achievement, what makes us really feel accomplished and brings us to happiness. He said achievement is a science, but fulfillment is an art. The defining factor of our success ins never resources its resourcefulness, and that it all depends on emotion. The reason we desire to grow and achieve is to meet our other desire to give.

3. John Wooden: "On Success"
John Wooden spoke about coaching and teaching at UCLA. He often referred back to the lessons he had learned from his father, when growing up on the family farm. He was a very endearing old man that spoke in a way that made me want to work hard to truly do my very best. Also to live in a good way and be kind to others.

The 11th Hour

I was shocked after viewing The 11th Hour. Global Warming issues are constantly making headlines yet the concept seems like it won't ever affect "us". I found the film highly inspiring. Immediately, I am making a conscious effort to personally make small changes to create long lasting change. Something as simple as not using a daily straw or recycling a plastic bottle, when multiplied across thousands of people can have a profound impact. Before we act we must each contemplate how our consumption will affect 7 generations from now, because if we continue to consume at the rate we are today, the resources of our world will be depleted and only mountains of trash will remain.
